One day this week, ten minutes before school was supposed to let out, my phone rang. It was our favorite school principal. My stomach flipped instantly.
Little Spice had told her he was sad and wanted to call me to come home.
And now I’m left wondering:
- Is it his meds?
- Did something happen?
- Is he avoiding a situation in class?
- Or is he becoming emotionally astute and aware of his feelings, and learning to advocate for himself?
He’s been sad several days this week, and I’m racking my brain trying to figure out how to help him, how to protect him, how to teach him resilience without burying his real feelings. All I know is, this little human trusted me enough to ask for help when his heart felt too heavy.
Sometimes the calls aren’t emergencies.
‘Sometimes the calls are exactly the emergency my heart feels them to be.
